YA Scavenger Hunt - Spring 2020 Team Red

Hello, I’m Elizabeth Langston, your hostess for this stop on the YASH with TEAM RED!

The YA Scavenger Hunt is a bi-annual event, first organized by author Colleen Houck as a way to give readers a chance to gain access to exclusive bonus material from their favorite authors…and a chance to win some awesome prizes! So enjoy your stop here and at the other 19 stops on Team Red. Then check out the other 3 teams (blue, gold, and purple). But play fast! This contest only lasts until Sunday, April 5, 2020.

First, 2 things about me.
  • I am an autism mom.Since April is World Autism Awareness Month, my secret number relates to the prevalence of people with autism. (Check the end of the post for that number).
  • I have my own giveaway--that's another reason to check out the end of this post for details.
Next, a reminder about the YA Scavenger Hunt.

For complete rules and instructions, go to the YA Scavenger Hunt - How to Hunt page. Directions: Collect the favorite numbers of all the authors on all the teams, add them up and enter (don't worry, you can use a calculator!).  Entry Form: Once you've added up all the numbers, make sure you fill out the form here to officially qualify for the grand prize. Only entries that have the correct number will qualify.
Rules: Open internationally; anyone below the age of 18 should have a parent or guardian's permission to enter. To be eligible for the grand prize, you must submit the completed entry form by noon Pacific Time on Sunday, April 5, 2020. Entries sent without the correct number or without contact information will not be considered.

Basically, enjoy exclusive content on each stop on the hunt, collect clues, enter individual author giveaways, add up the clues (numbers), and return to the YASH site to enter for more prizes.

Here are all of the great e-books you could win
from Team Red.

Now, let me introduce my guest author, Tera Lynn Childs --

Tera Lynn Childs is the award-winning young adult author of the mythology-based Oh. My. Gods. series, the Forgive My Fins mermaid romance series, the kick-butt monster-hunting Sweet Venom trilogy, and the Darkly Fae series. She also wrote the City Chicks sweet chick lit romance series and co-wrote the Hero Agenda and Creative HeArts series.

Tera currently parks her laptop in Las Vegas and spends her time writing wherever she can find a comfy chair and a steady stream of caffeinated beverages.

Now, let's learn more about her featured book, Pretty in Pearls.

As best friend and emissary to her mer kingdom’s princess, Periwinkle Wentletrap juggles many responsibilities. At the moment those include getting the princess (and herself) ready for the upcoming Sea Harvest Dance.

When a trip to the Thalassinian marketplace for pearls and dress-making supplies leads to a reunion with her long-time crush, Peri is once again caught up in the swirl of emotions she feels for a thoughtful pearl trader who reminds her of a dashing pirate.

But things are never simple with Riatus Ballenato. The shadows of his past have come back to haunt him and he will do anything to keep those he cares about from getting caught in the darkness. Even if that means pushing away the girl he’s falling for.

With the dance fast approaching, it might take a little outside help to bring Peri and her crush together at last.

Exclusive bonus content from Tera Lynn!
For her YASH bonus content, TLC is super excited to share a short story that only her Mythfits (aka her email subscribers) have seen. It's called "The Making of a Merman" and it takes place immediately after the end of Just For Fins, in her Forgive My Fins series.

WARNING: If you haven't read the first three books (Forgive My Fins, Fins Are Forever, and Just For Fins) this story contains MAJOR spoilers.

The Making of a Merman
Quince Fletcher is about to face the biggest change of his life. Is he ready for it?

There are two ways to read the story.

  2. I have been deeply enjoying The Good Doctor, I love that this show expresses that just because someone may have autism doesn't mean that they are unable to follow dreams of being a doctor, or other challenging career paths.

    1. Writing as Julia Day, I've written 2 books with autistic characters. FADE TO US has a main character (teen girl) with autism. THE POSSIBILITY OF SOMEWHERE has a minor character with autism (young boy.) If your name is selected for the giveaway, I hope you'll consider choosing one of these books. My daughter was the sensitivity reader for both of them, to ensure I made the rep positive.

    1. I hope you have the chance. My daughter has reviewed a few books and TV shows on her blog--to discuss in her uniquely honest way how she feels about their representation. www.amylangston.com ... She doesn't have many reviews out there yet, but she hopes to grow that feature.

  6. my netflix obsession is definitely Atypical. I think it's a really good representation of autism, and overall it's an incredibly good coming of age show. Anyone who loves YA would like it.

Also, the most recent bok I read featuring a character on the spectrum was Don't Tell Don't Tell Don't Tell by Liane Shaw. It's about a boy who's friend goes missing, who might know something about her disappearance, but who is struggling, because he promised not to tell. It was good, and also, in my opinion, a good representation of the thought process of people on the spectrum.

    1. My daughter (see www.amylangston.com) has reviewed Atypical. She likes it too. She had a few concerns about the way the first season represented autism. The second season has improved; she's liking it even better.

I'm not familiar with the Shaw book, but I will check it out.

  13. I can't recall reading any books with autistic characters. But I've watched the original Korean drama of The Good Doctor. I've also recently rewatched Elementary and I remember that Sherlock was in a relationship with a woman that was autistic for a little bit. I was actually quite disappointed that she wasn't in it for longer, I really liked her character.
