YA Scavenger Hunt 2019 with Julia Day

Hello, I’m Julia Day, your hostess for this stop on the YASH with TEAM PURPLE!

The YA Scavenger Hunt is a bi-annual event, first organized by author Colleen Houck as a way to give readers a chance to gain access to exclusive bonus material from their favorite authors…and a chance to win some awesome prizes! So enjoy your stop here and at the other 19 stops on Team Purple. Then check out the other 4 teams (blue, gold, green, and red). But play fast! This contest only lasts until Sunday, April 7, 2019.

First, a little about me.
  • I am an autism mom. My autistic daughter graduates next month with her Master of Arts (and then it's job time, baby!) Since April is World Autism Awareness Month, I'm featuring my book Fade to Us, a sweet YA contemporary romance set during a summer musical theater camp. One of the main characters, Natalie, is an autistic teen.
  • I have my own giveaway. See the end of this post for details on how to enter.
  • Traveling the world is one of my favorite things to do--and I especially like to see mountains. (See is the important word here. I do not like to climb.) Some of my favorites are in Switzerland, Iceland, New Zealand, and Antarctica.
  • I really hate cilantro. I cannot emphasize this enough.

Next, a reminder about the YA Scavenger Hunt.

For complete rules and instructions, go to the YA Scavenger Hunt - How to Hunt page. Directions: Somewhere below, you'll notice that I've listed my favorite number. Collect the favorite numbers of all the authors on all the teams, add them up and enter (don't worry, you can use a calculator!).  Entry Form: Once you've added up all the numbers, make sure you fill out the form here to officially qualify for the grand prize. Only entries that have the correct number will qualify.
Rules: Open internationally; anyone below the age of 18 should have a parent or guardian's permission to enter. To be eligible for the grand prize, you must submit the completed entry form by noon Pacific Time on Sunday, April 7, 2019. Entries sent without the correct number or without contact information will not be considered.

Basically, enjoy exclusive content on each stop on the hunt, collect clues, enter individual author giveaways, add up the clues (numbers), and return to the YASH site to enter for more prizes.

Here are all of the great books you could win from Team Purple.

Now, introducing my guest author, Carly Marino --

Carly loves writing and reading about love. Regardless the genre - paranormal, contemporary, fantasy--if there's romance--she wants to read it!

She was born in Hawai'i but grew up most of her life in a small town in Michigan and the sunny beaches of Florida. After graduating high school, she returned to her island ohana for college where she wrote her thesis on how to write a young adult book. (Oddly enough)

Wife, mother, dog owner, and author, her hat constantly changes but she loves every minute of the hustle. Writing is her passion and the wonderful nagging voice in her head. She’s blessed to have amazing family and friends who've supported her from her first story, written in poor phonics and elementary chicken scratch, to her International best seller, Memory Walker.

Now, let's learn more about her featured book  TARNISHED LIGHT.

Coy, daughter of an Angel and a Fallen, swore she would never submit to her darkness. Not like she has a choice. She has a big fat apocalyptic prophecy stamped on her soul. If she fails to keep her death-craving, evil blood in check, she’ll unleash a battle between Heaven and Hell. Alone in her struggle, she prowls the city streets, saving innocents and searching for a cure to change her fate.

When she loses control, the Nephilim drag her to their palace. Fearful for her life, Coy agrees to undergo demon-provoking tests to cleanse her blood. Her chances to escape seem slim. Until she meets Killian, who tempts her with his angelic looks and inner darkness. He offers a way out, but she’ll have to embrace the evil inside. Once she invokes the demon, though, she may never return.

  1. I never get sick of Eros stories, except one time I read someone commenting about how its actually abusive because she's not allowed to look at him and forced to trust him and that squicked me and made me wary of an adaptation I once loved.

    1. I didn't know what an Eros story was, so I had to look this up on TVTropes.

  2. I'm all for romance, but two tropes I am just done with are love triangles and instalove. Do not like. 🤷‍♀️

    1. How fast is too fast with instalove? Just curious; in one of my books, the couple meet at a summer job and spend 10-hour days together for a week before talking about dating...and there were a few reviews that called that instalove.

  3. I love all genres of stories but the one I think there's enough of are love triangles.

    1. Yeah, someone always gets left out. I feel bad for that character if they're great person (unless they get their own book.)

  4. "What type of story do you wish YA authors would write more of? Or are there types of stories where you think "enough already"?" I like fantasy stories. And originality is terrific!

  5. I am tired of the love triangles.

  6. I'm not really tired of any of them. I could go for more mythology retellings.

  7. I like original fantasy stories, but still set in the real world. I'm tired of vampire love stories but a story like Not Even Bones was so different, set in the real world, but still had fantasy elements. I wish more stories were written like that.

  8. I like fantasy, but am a bit tired of angel stories.

  9. I would like to see more christian fiction young adult books.

  10. I have a long answer lol. First I'll never get enough Steampunk or fairytale retellings. Ever. I read and absolutely loved the book Under a Painted Sky by Stacey Lee. It takes place in 1849 on the Oregon Trail and after I finished reading it I went looking for other YA novels about the Oregon Trail and couldn't really find anything. As I was looking for those I also realized that there's not a lot of YA Historical Fiction that takes place in places other then Europe. So more YA Historical Fiction in places other then Europe would also fantastic to have.

    1. Have you read any of the Steampunk by Jeannie Lin? She has Gunpowder Alchemy. They're set in China. And if you'd be interested in YA historical in the US, I could recommend some of that too.

I don't really think we have too many of any type of book. I am enjoying the retellings of classic fairytales and as one author recently told me LGBTQ is the new hero! I agree and love reading books with diverse characters that can speak to all the different readers in the world.

  12. (Oh boy, technology hates me. Let's see if I can make this comment thing work - third time's a charm)

I'll never say no to more fantasy, steampunk, or faerie-tale retellings, but, with that said, I do think it would be great if there were more alternate history stories there to join the ranks! (Or historical mysteries. Those are also great!) In terms of what I think there is already enough of in the YA world, I have to agree with many other commenters; love triangles have grown tiresome in most scenarios. I'd rather read a story with no romance then have the standard "loyal, sweet childhood friend" and "mysterious new guy with instant attraction." On that note, I'd like to see more female protagonists with male friends who *don't* become the love interest at some point in the story!

  13. I’m always looking for more dystopians or urban fantasies and I love a good forbidden romance!

  14. I'm in love with fantay romances :)

I would love to see more steampunk, mythology and heroic dragons in books. Especially the heroic dragons. It seems that most stories about dragons involve them being the villain and they need to be slayed. I want more where we befriend them and go on an adventure together.

  17. I love fantasy, sci-fi, steampunk, fairy tale retellings, dark and happy stories. I would love to see more diversity in characters and cultures and less of a focus on romance in YA books.

  18. I would love more books dealing with mythology other than greek. I would love stories especially based on asian or island mythology.

  20. We could use more books with diverse main characters instead of the typical white girl or white boy main characters.

  21. I love reading retellings of fairytales and historical fiction!

  22. I would love to see more of anything you can writ. More fantasy and more romance. I like all tropes but enemies to lovers or friends to lovers romances are two types of romances. I love to read anything so please just keep writing.

  23. I'd love to read more dystopian.

  24. I could NEVER get enough of Si-fi, dystopian, apocalyptic, and zombie books! I just love them. I like romance books but I feel that there are sooo many, I need a little more action and suspense to go along with it 😊

  25. I win never get enought to read what i love the most such as epic adventure, science-fiction, historical fiction, romances, or fairy tale retelling. All within those genre, i'll read for sure!!
