Do teens go to dances anymore?

I never went to a dance in high school. They were generally held on Friday nights, when I had a job. I never went to prom either.

At the time, I didn't think that it was a big deal. But maybe I was just repressing my true feelings because now, in every YA book that I write, there has been a dance.

My teen daughter tells me that a dance scene is so cliched. (Okay, sorry about that. This is one cliche that I love.)

My husband tells me that high school kids don't go to high school dances anymore, except prom.  He read it in the newspaper, which means somebody studied it. So that has to be right.

I went to a dance (yes, this is true) on Saturday night and asked my friends-with-teen-kids if their children went to high school dances. "No, not unless it's prom."

So if anyone knows the real truth out there, please leave me a blog comment or send me an email or something. I'm really curious now.

Warning: I will still have dance scenes in books when I need them. The teen in me--who never went to a dance--wants to experience it anyway I can.

  2. I wonder if it's a regional thing. Some friends in New England says that dances are big there. But my friends in a surburban part of NC say that, no, dances have faded away.
